Mahrez signs four-year contract with Al Ahli at £750k-a-week
Riyad Mahrez has left Manchester City to join Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli on a four-year deal. The Algerian winger has signed for a reported fee of £30 million and will earn a staggering £750,000-a-week.
Mahrez, 31, joined City from Leicester City in 2018 and won three Premier League titles, four League Cups and the FA Cup during his time at the club. He was a key player in City's title-winning campaign last season, scoring 24 goals in all competitions.
However, Mahrez had fallen out of favour with City manager Pep Guardiola in recent months and had been linked with a move away from the club. He has now opted to join Al Ahli, who are one of the richest clubs in Saudi Arabia.
The move is a huge payday for Mahrez, who will become the highest-paid player in the Middle East. It is also a sign of the growing financial power of Saudi Arabian football clubs.
Mahrez is the latest high-profile player to move to Saudi Arabia in recent years. In 2019, Newcastle United signed Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães for £40 million, and in 2020, Al Nassr signed former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema for a reported fee of £80 million.
The influx of foreign talent is helping to raise the standard of football in Saudi Arabia. The country is now one of the most competitive leagues in Asia, and Al Ahli are hoping that Mahrez can help them win their first league title since 2016.
Mahrez is a talented player who will be a major asset to Al Ahli. He is a creative winger who can score goals and create chances for his teammates. He will be expected to lead Al Ahli to success in both the league and the AFC Champions League.
